Note – many of my pages are unreachable if you try to navigate your way through the WordPress page hierarchy. The effect of valuation on long term total return September 20, 2015. It’s based on hypothetical data, but with links to real-world charts and studies etc. at the end.

Employers Holdings’ reserving – The page shows how a chart can illustrate an insurer’s reserving history, showing if they’ve reserved enough, more than enough, or too little and had to add to reserves.

An explanation of an insurance company’s reserving – it’s a long piece with simple and detailed explanations. Many readers will get as much info as they need from the short piece about Employers Holdings’ reserving, above.

The terminology of insurance reserves – a long piece which includes the gap between insurance glossaries and the way terms are used in practice. I also show how the context matters.

The approximation Return = Yield + Dividend growth is nearly always close enough – it’s not vital reading, but I’ve used the more accurate formula (below), and decided I ought to show how much difference it makes with a few charts.

Return = Yield + Dividend growth + (Yield * Dividend growth) – This is not essential reading, but I used the formula so I thought I’d better show how I derived it. One derivation involves summing a geometric series.
